Steph Goertz
for Mayor
Businesses • Recreation • Community Life
Wilmot Council has six members. If elected as Mayor, I will have one vote. I can bring ideas forward, advocate for policy changes, ask questions, work with other members of Council and build support—but I cannot promise how other members will vote. It is important for you to vote for people who have demonstrated their commitment to our community.
Child-Care Businesses & Spaces
If elected I would like to help families find the child-care spaces that already exist. Families in Wilmot are struggling to find child care at the same time that some independent home child-care providers are closing because they cannot fill their spaces.
If elected, I would work with the Wilmot & Wellesley Resource Centre and the Region to create or strengthen a local, opt-in child-care directory where independent home providers can post available spaces and families can find them.
The Township would not endorse or inspect providers, but the list would make it easier for families and local child-care businesses to find each other.
To start this process, I would like to meet with local child-care providers to talk about what would help them stay open. If you would like to be invited to the meetings, please email stephanie4wilmot@gmail.com
Reopen the Conversation About Our Recreation Space
I will reopen the conversation about Wilmot's future recreation and arena needs, bringing sports associations, service clubs, businesses, community groups and residents to the table.
Before deciding what a future space should look like, we should better understand what our community needs, what opportunities exist for partnerships, and what different visions could be possible.
This should include looking at our existing facilities, ideas that have already been brought forward by community members, and opportunities for new or shared spaces.
Give young people a real voice in municipal decisions
I would propose:
-
Expand the Youth Advisory Council's mandate so it can bring recommendations directly to Council on issues young people care about.
-
Create opportunities for youth representatives to participate with other Township committees and working groups, particularly when issues affect young people.
-
Work with schools and organizations that specialize in civic participation to teach young people how municipal government works, how to delegate, how to participate in consultations and how to turn an idea into a proposal.
