Region of Waterloo Council has asked staff to prepare a report on the potential benefits and impacts of data centre development

"the Region relies primarily on groundwater for drinking water, making water-intensive development a matter of regional interest;"

"Council should understand how data centre development may affect infrastructure capacity, environmental sustainability, and economic development"

"municipalities are beginning to assess the opportunities, risks, and policy issues related to data centres"

The report will include

"--Economic opportunities, including investment, innovation, construction jobs, temporary and permanent jobs, and support for the digital economy.

--Infrastructure needs and impacts, including:

cumulative electricity demand relative to available grid capacity;

water consumption based on different cooling technologies;

wastewater servicing;

telecommunications infrastructure;

emergency services planning.

--Environmental considerations and best practices, including water use, electricity demand, greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, water conservation, sustainable cooling, and responsible operations."
